Why has NSO switched to Purolator?
NSO chose to switch transportation systems to reduce the amount of time specimens spend in transit. Under our old system, 41% of specimens arrived at NSO after three or more business days. With the switch to Purolator, the great majority of specimens will spend only a single business day in transit.
The Purolator e-ship online system also allows NSO to track a parcel from its shipment from your centre to its arrival in our laboratory, allowing us to know immediately if there is a delay in shipment or if specimens are lost in transit.
What address should I enter in the Purolator system for NSO?
Newborn Screening Ontario
401 Smyth Rd, Room 3127
Ottawa ON

If I only have one specimen, should I wait a few days until I have more to send via Purolator?
Please DO NOT wait for a number of newborn screening specimens to schedule a pickup. It is important that every sample reaches us as quickly as possible. The major reason we are switching to Purolator is to reduce the amount of time between specimen collection and the specimen arriving in our lab- therefore, every specimen should be sent as soon as possible. Although this costs us more in transportation fess, it can make a big difference in an infant’s health if they have one of the conditions we screen for.
Can we use manual waybills instead of electronic waybills?
No. If you use manual waybills NSO is not notified that you have sent us a package and we have no way to track the package, thus, if it is lost in transit we have no way of knowing and informing you.
Should we send in specimens on Friday? Or on the weekend?
Please ship specimens to us on Friday, these specimens will arrive in our lab on Monday. NSO is closed on weekends, thus specimens collected late Friday, Saturday, and Sunday should be shipped to us on Monday.
What is the cost to ship specimens via Purolator?
NSO is covering the cost of specimen transportation. There is no cost to your hospital/midwifery practice as long as you complete the electronic waybill.
